When Should You Have an Eye Exam?

Seeing your eye care professional at regular intervals should be a part of your life since birth. However, as an adult, there are some important stages in life where you should have your eyes thoroughly examined as your risk of developing an eye disease increases.

Exam Frequency for Adults

The American Optometrists’ Association recommends that adults aged 18 to 64 attend a comprehensive eye exam at least every 2 years. However, at Eyes on Chagrin, we place importance on building a relationship with you to best monitor your eye health. We feel we can do this best when we see you at least once a year.

Additionally, if you are considered “high-risk” due to a condition like diabetes, you should visit your optometrist at least annually or as recommended.

Exam Frequency for Seniors

With age comes an increased risk of developing vision-threatening eye conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts. For those 65 and older, the American Optometrists’ Association recommends you see your optometrist at least once a year.

What Does an Exam Entail?

When you visit us for a comprehensive eye examination, we’ll go through several steps to thoroughly examine and discuss your ocular health.

Health History

The first step of the appointment will be a lengthy discussion of your health history. We will ask about any eye or vision problems you’re currently having, any medication you’re taking, and any external conditions in your life that may be affecting your health or vision.

Visual Acuity

We will then begin testing your visual acuity using several different tests. The most commonly recognized test we will use is a standard letter chart, called a Snellen chart. This test involves reading letters of differing sizes at a set distance.

If you need vision correction, we may use a phoropter to determine the prescription of lenses you need.

Preliminary & Diagnostic Tests

We’ll also evaluate your eyes’ overall health and function, such as depth perception, color vision, eye muscle movements, peripheral vision, and how your eyes respond to light. We may dilate your pupils and use a slit lamp microscope to get a better view of the inside of your eye.

If we detect early signs of a condition or disease, we’ll discuss them with you immediately and recommend further testing or treatment.
